Free Word Counter

Paste or type. Counts update as you go. Text stays in this box. Nothing is uploaded. Reading time uses 225 words per minute as a common estimate, not a measured speed.

How to use the word counter

Paste or type into the box. Words, characters, sentences, paragraphs, and an estimated reading time update as you go. There is no Count button. There is no file upload. The text stays in this browser.

  1. Paste a draft, or type directly in the box.
  2. Read Words for whitespace-separated tokens, which matches how most editors count words.
  3. Use Characters and No spaces when a platform limit includes or ignores spaces.
  4. Treat reading time as an estimate at 225 words per minute, not a measured reading speed.

How words and sentences are counted

A word is a run of characters separated by whitespace. Hyphenated terms count as one word, the same way a basic split in a text editor would. Sentences are splits on period, question mark, or exclamation mark. If your text has no of those marks, one sentence is reported when the box is not empty.

Paragraphs are blocks split by a blank line. A single line break inside a paragraph does not start a new paragraph. That matches how many writing tools treat a hard break versus a new block.

This is not a clicker. It does not share code with the homepage counter except the page chrome. Competing word counters add keyword density, file upload, and exam presets. This version counts in the box and stops there so the page stays light.

What this first version does not do

  • No file upload, no grammar check, and no keyword-density panel.
  • No Flesch score in this version.
  • Text is not sent to Clicker Counters. Clearing the box or site data removes it.

If you need a tap counter rather than a text count, go to the homepage clicker. Analytics cookies for the site are described in the Privacy Policy.

Editors disagree on hyphens, numbers, and extra spaces. This page uses a simple whitespace split.

The box will accept a long draft. Very large pastes may feel slower because the page updates on every keystroke.
